Colorless cards are available to all characters. These cards are generally not gained from normal card reward screens--adventurers must instead acquire them through a combination of merchant shops, events, relic effects, and card effects. All colorless cards provide a beneficial effect ranging from mildly to extremely powerful.
The Merchant always has two colorless cards in his stock. They are always Uncommon or Rare. Obtaining the Prismatic Shard allows those colorless cards to appear in normal card reward screens as well.
All the other colorless cards, despite sharing a grey border with Common cards, are all special cards that can only be obtained from certain events, or generated by certain cards and relics.
